Scholars examined many aspects of the Civil War in Missouri during the first hundred years of the Missouri Historical Review. Using sources as varied as official records, memoirs, newspapers, letters, and novels, authors explored the impact of the war on the state and its residents. William Parrish, noted Civil War historian and professor emeritus at Mississippi State University, has selected 12 of the more than 170 articles on the Civil War that have appeared in the Review for this anthology. The authors probe a variety of topics, including state government and politics, civilian relief efforts, military actions, prisons, the status of African Americans, and novelists’ treatment of the conflict.
