Detailed Description
The Eads bridge was constructed as the first link to Illinois over the Mississippi River from St. Louis. When completed in 1874 the bridge was the longest in the world, with an overall length of 6442 feet. The ribbed arch spans were considered daring, as was the use of steel as a primary structure. The construction with an upper deck which allowed for vehicular traffic and a lower deck for rail traffic.
